Mental Health Resources - Commitment 17

The Commitment:

Distribute translated information on mental health resources to all staff and/or post that information in a prominent location.

Why This Commitment?

Mental health support was an identified need in the Bow Valley community generally, and among newcomer populations specifically, pre-pandemic. However, since 2020, service providers have noticed alarming trends in mental health needs. Health sector organizations, settlement organizations, and newcomers themselves have observed that lack of awareness of mental health supports and resources is an important contributor to these challenges.

Concepts, terminology, and approaches to mental health vary significantly across different cultures, so clear communication on this topic is vital.

There is more work to be done to help newcomers connect with culturally appropriate mental health information and resources, but for now, the best tool we have is translated resources.

How to Complete This Commitment (Evaluation Plan)

To complete this commitment, you can use any of the resources provided below. New resources will be added as they become available.

In October 2022, we’ll ask you to:

  1. Show us the bulletin board or space(s) where the resources below are shared in at least 3 languages, or

  2. Forward us copies of three emails that were sent to all of your staff on three separate months between October 2021 and October 2022. Mental Health resources in at least 3 languages should be attached or linked from the email. (If you use other methods to share all staff updates, such as a staff intranet, we will accept equivalent screenshots.)

Evidence of (1) or (2) will prove completion of this commitment.
